The WRONG way to presell

The worst thing you can do in a preselling article is to pitch the product you’re preselling. In fact, most articles you write with the intention of preselling will not even mention the product you’re promoting. Sometimes it’s fine to make a casual mention – especially if it’s among a list of options for solving a particular problem.

But it’s counterproductive to your cause to start “selling” in your preselling article. As soon as you start talking about how great a particular product or service is, you lose credibility in your reader’s mind. They think, “How she’s just trying to sell me something.” And they don’t take to heart anything you say.

Also, if you’re not giving any useful advice or information, your reader will stop reading and go somewhere else. The worst thing you can do is try to recreate the sales letter and provide no value.

Another big mistake is to link directly to your affiliate link. When you do this, your reader can see it in the address bar. If they see anything that looks like and affiliate link, the same thing happens. They think you’re just trying to sell them something and this makes them want to not click the link.

As strange as it sounds, the words “click here” will get you less clicks than words or phrases that are relevant to the topic. So don’t use “click here for more info” or anything like that if you really want to get the clicks.

And above all else, don’t make hyped up claims or false statements. This should go without saying, and if you’re following the advice above it’s not an issue, anyway. But it’s important to realize that people can see through hype. So trying to make the product you’re promoting seem better than it is will not only hurt your reputation. It will also decrease the number of people who click through to find out about the product.

Here’s a quick recap of the wrong way to presell:

  • Pitch the product
  • Provide no real content
  • Link directly to your affiliate link
  • Use “click here” in your links
  • Include lots of hype!

      James,
That’s a great question and tells me that you’re really thinking about this like a business. You definitely should add an opt-in form to your blog and collect email addresses and build your list. The Massive Blog Success System has more information about how to do this easily. And of course the opt-ins you collect on your blog are yours! ;)
